The Second Mayor's Cup, a basketball tournament featuring selection teams from commercial establishments and basketball clubs within the Municipality of Bacarra, will bow to the public on December 15, 2008.

Bacarra Mayor Nicomedes C. dela Cruz Jr. spearheads this basketball tournament which attracted quite a large following when it debuted last year.

The Liga ng mga Barangay team, made up of the Cabulalaan stalwarts--five-peat winner of the Summer Basketball Tournament (2004 to 2008)--and some reinforcements battled the Florida Bus team for the championship prize of P20,000 last year.

The Florida Bus team, buttressed by varsity players from Cagayan, went home with the plum prize but only after sweating it out with the never-say-die Liga ng mga Barangay team.

This year's Mayor's Cup promises to be another thrilling basketball tournament worth looking forward to. Aside from cash prizes for the top four teams, awards will also be given to the Mythical Five and best center, best forward and best guard.

Dateline Bacarra, Dec. 22, 2008 - The MV Trading has posted six straight wins in the ongoing Second Mayor's Cup Christmas Basketball Tournament participated in by eight teams which opened last December 15, 2008 at the Philip Corpus Velasco Socio-Civic and Cultural Center.

The team, co-managed by entrepreneur Miguel Visaya and the local chief executive, Mayor Nicomedes C. dela Cruz Jr., is poised for a clean sweep of the round-robin eliminations, with only Team EIGHTEEN, toting a 1-win 4-loss record, standing in the way.

The GMW Trans, the defending champions, and Calsada-Pamani Farm Supply team are both tied with 4 wins and 2 losses apiece while Phil-Ex Cargo and RESBAK have carded the same 3 wins and 2 losses slate.

Teams ABC and EIGHTEEN also carry the same 1-win 4-loss slate while ODREIGH Bonoan's Selection team is the tailender with six straight losses.

GMW Trans has RESBAK for its final game in the eliminations while RESBAK still has to tackle Team EIGHTEEN.

Meanwhile, Phil-Ex Cargo has two games to play, one with Calsada-Pamani and the other with the winless ODREIGH team.

The following scenarios loom in the background: Should Phil-Ex Cargo sweep its remaining games and if GMW Trans trashes RESBAK, Phil-Ex Cargo and GMW Trans would be tied at 5-wins and 2-losses.

If Calsada-Pamani beats Phil-Ex Cargo tomorrow, December 23, and GMW Trans beats RESBAK this afternoon, Calsada-Pamani and GMW Trans would finish the elimination round with identical 5-wins and 2-losses.

Watch out for the game updates tomorrow.

Dateline Bacarra, Dec. 23, 2008 -- Seven straight wins!

A job well done for the MV Trading which swept the competition in the elimination round of the ongoing Second Mayor’s Cup Christmas Basketball Tournament at the Philip Corpus Velasco Socio-Civic and Cultural Center.

It now awaits in the wings for its rival for the plum prize of Php50,000 and the championship trophy.

Second-placer GMW Trans, with a 5-win 2-loss slate, is not yet sure of barging into the championship round and defending the crown it won last year.

The result of the remaining game between Phil-Ex Cargo and Calsada-Pamani Farm Supply who tote a similar 4-win 2-loss card at 6:30 P.M today will determine who gets tied with GMW Trans, the defending champions.

If Phil-Ex Cargo defeats Calsada-Pamani, it ties GMW Trans and advances automatically to the best-of-three finals versus MV Trading by virtue of the win-over-the-other ruling, having won over GMW Trans, 109-89, last December 17, 2008.

If Calsada-Pamani prevails over Phil-Ex Cargo, it also ties GMW Trans, but won’t go to the championship round as it lost to GMW Trans, 78 -82, on December 21, 2008.

Either Phil-Ex Cargo or GMW Trans has the chance to fight it out with MV Trading for the Php50,000 plum prize on December 27-28, 2008. (Ernesto B. Andres)

Dec. 29, Monday. MV TRADING RULES 2ND MAYOR'S CUP CHRISTMAS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

MV Trading lorded it over PHIL-EX CARGO in the best-of-three finals of the Second Mayor's Cup Christmas Basketball Tournament on December 27-28, 2008 and bagged the championship trophy and the plum prize of Php50,000.

In the first game played at the Philip Corpus Velasco Socio-Civic and Cultural Center on Dec. 27, Saturday, MV Trading made mincemeat of Phil-Ex Cargo, running away by as much as 20 points several times during the match.

The second game the next day was a complete reversal of the first game. It was Phil-Ex Cargo which was on fire when the game began. It posted margins of 20 several times. But it sputtered at the dying minutes of the game.

When the 40-minute game came to a close, both teams were tied and a five-minute extension ensued. MV Trading immediately posted a five-point margin. But the score was again tied at the end of the extension.

A second five-minute extension followed.

And MV Trading came out the better!

Phil-Ex Cargo bagged the Php30,000 first-runnerup prize while GMW Trans, the deposed champions, went home with the Php20,000 third prize, the same amount it received when it emerged champion in the First Mayor's Cup Christmas Basketball tournament in December 2007.
